Board members during board meeting

At its July 15 meeting, the Norman Board of Education brought a resolution affirming its commitment to the education, safety and privacy of all students, regardless of immigration status.

The resolution reflects the district’s ongoing efforts to support students and families by following the law, protecting student privacy and ensuring schools remain welcoming places to learn and grow.

“Our mission is to prepare and inspire all students to achieve their full potential, and that begins with ensuring every student has access to a safe and supportive learning environment,” said Superintendent Dr. Nick Migliorino. “This resolution reaffirms our responsibility to provide equal educational opportunities and to protect the rights and privacy of the students we serve. I’m proud of our Board for taking this action so that every student and family knows they are welcome in Norman Public Schools.”

Board Member Dawn Brockman, who introduced the resolution, emphasized its importance. “Every child in our schools deserves to feel safe, seen and supported,” said Brockman. “This resolution sends a clear message that Norman Public Schools is committed to protecting the rights of all students and families. We will continue to uphold the law and stand by our values of inclusion and respect.”

The Board’s resolution recognizes that:

  • The district must provide equal educational opportunities to all students living within its boundaries

  • Schools should be places of support and safety for students affected by immigration-related issues

  • The district does not collect information related to a student’s immigration status

  • The privacy of student information will continue to be protected in accordance with Board Policy and federal law

In addition, the resolution authorizes the superintendent to take any necessary action to ensure families are informed of their rights and available resources.

The full resolution is available on the July 14, 2025 Board Meeting Agenda.
