Norman Public Schools (NPS), in partnership with the Norman Philharmonic, presented a moving and collaborative Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Center for Arts and Learning. The event brought together students, educators, professional musicians, and community members to honor the enduring contributions of Black Americans to the arts, culture, and history.

The dynamic program featured a Unity Choir composed of NPS choirs, Langston University Choirs and community singers, alongside performances by the Norman Philharmonic Orchestra, a gospel combo, the Langston University Choir, dance ensembles, and visual artists. The celebration highlighted the power of collaboration across Norman Public Schools, Langston University, the University of Oklahoma, and local arts partners.

A highlight of the afternoon was a special guest performance by Elvie Ellis, an Oklahoma native, University of Oklahoma graduate, and current cast member of Broadway’s Tony Award-winning production of Hamilton. His appearance provided a memorable and inspiring experience for students and audience members alike.

“This celebration reflects the heart of our fine arts programs and the importance of providing students with opportunities to experience and participate in meaningful, culturally rich artistic collaborations,” Dr. Evelyn Kwanza, Director of Fine Arts for Norman Public Schools, said.

NPS staff and students attended the event alongside families and community members, reinforcing the district’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality arts education and community engagement.

The Black History Month Celebration was made possible in part through support from Allied Arts and the Harris Foundation.
