Energy Star Recipients

Norman, OK — At tonight’s Board of Education meeting, Norman Public Schools announced that 14 district buildings have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® Certification, a national recognition awarded to the most energy-efficient buildings in the country.

“We are extremely pleased to receive this recognition from ENERGY STAR,” said Justin Milner, Associate Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer for Norman Public Schools. “It’s proof that we’re operating healthier, more efficient buildings for our students and community.”

Milner added, “Our energy conservation efforts are saving taxpayer dollars while helping protect the environment. Just as importantly, the reduction in carbon emissions is equivalent to eliminating 6.2 million miles driven by an average vehicle or the amount of carbon sequestered by more than 41,000 trees over 10 years. We’re proud that our efforts are being recognized with this certification.”

To earn ENERGY STAR Certification, buildings must rank in the top 25 percent nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict indoor air quality and ventilation standards. The following Norman Public Schools sites earned the distinction:

  • Administration Building

  • Alcott Middle School

  • Dimensions Academy

  • Eisenhower Elementary School

  • Irving Middle School

  • Kennedy Elementary School

  • Lincoln Elementary School

  • Madison Elementary School

  • Reagan Elementary School

  • Roosevelt Elementary School

  • Truman Elementary School

  • Truman Primary

  • Washington Elementary School

  • Wilson Elementary School

Utility costs are the second largest budget item for Norman Public Schools, and prices for electricity, natural gas, heating oil and water continue to rise. In response, the district partnered with Cenergistic to implement a districtwide, behavior-based energy conservation program. Since the program began, the district has reduced its energy consumption by 12 percent.

The program focuses on improving energy efficiency across all campuses. Energy Specialist Sarah Chan uses advanced monitoring technology to track energy use and identify areas of improvement. She collaborates with district staff and Cenergistic engineers to fine-tune systems and schedules. Through ongoing education and awareness, the program shapes energy-conscious behaviors that result in long-term savings and better building performance.

Cenergistic clients have saved more than $6.7 billion in energy costs since 1986. The company’s science-based programs and patented technologies help schools and other organizations optimize energy use and redirect savings to areas that support their core mission. Their approach requires no upfront costs, new equipment or retrofits, giving clients greater control over their energy use with minimal disruption.
