WHAT TO KNOW
- Due to winter weather conditions, schools will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 1.
- This will be a traditional snow day and no instruction will take place for students.
- All school activities are canceled Wednesday, Feb. 1.
- Decision for Thursday will be communicated as soon as possible Wednesday.
We have remained in close contact with our partners at the National Weather Service in Norman and at Weather Decision Technologies. Winter weather conditions remain in the forecast, and as a result, we’ve made the decision to close school Wednesday, Feb. 1.
The variables for winter weather this week have been constantly changing, as we saw yesterday when moisture arrived in the area earlier than forecasted. On top of the precipitation we received today and yesterday, there is a chance of more wintry precipitation tomorrow.
In addition to information received from our local meteorological partners, we take many factors into consideration when deciding whether to cancel school due to inclement weather. District maintenance crews have been working all day to prepare our buildings and parking lots, but with the additional freezing rain that has fallen today, it has become challenging to have facilities ready for students and staff.
While main roads may be passable, neighborhood bus routes and sidewalks could be hazardous and make it difficult for students to get to and from school safely. When winter weather develops during the school day, schools will not be dismissed early because many parents may be unable to take off work, leaving students home alone.
We know how important it is for parents to have as much information as possible and be able to plan. We will make a determination for Thursday and communicate to parents as early as possible Wednesday. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and please stay safe and warm in the coming days.
