Norman North hires coaches
Norman Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Nick Migliorino and Director of Athletics T.D. O’Hara announced jointly Monday the addition of two new coaches to the Norman Public Schools athletics department.
Kellen McCoy was named the new head coach of the Norman North boys’ basketball program, while Trevor Laffoon takes over the same role for the Norman North girls’ soccer team.
“We’re thrilled to announce the hiring of both Trevor and Kellen,” O’Hara said. “Both are exemplary in their passions for youth development and their respective sports. They will make fantastic additions to our athletics program, the Norman North family and their respective teams.
Laffoon takes over the reigns at Norman North after a three-year stint as the varsity assistant coach for the Timberwolves.
“Trevor graduated from Norman Public Schools and has a strong passion for the NNHS girls soccer program and the development of youth soccer in the Norman community,” O’Hara said. “I look forward to watching the program grow under his direction.”
Laffoon played collegiate soccer at Oral Roberts University where he was a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles. He was named the first-team All-Summit League as a senior in 2014 and was twice named ORU’s defensive player of the year and a team captain.
He takes over a Norman North squad fresh off an historic season that saw the Timberwolves finish as class 6A state semifinalists with their lone postseason loss coming at the hands of eventual state champion Broken Arrow.
McCoy comes to Norman from Mount Saint Mary’s Catholic High School in Oklahoma City where he has spent the last four years as head coach. With McCoy at the helm, the Rockets logged an overall record of 75-39, most recently finishing as a class 3A state semi-finalist in 2018 with a record of 23-6.
“Coach McCoy graduated from Norman Public Schools and is looking forward to being a part of the Norman community and school system as NNHS head boys basketball coach,” O’Hara said. “The body of work that coach McCoy accomplished as head coach at Mount St. Mary's has been impressive, including a state semi-final appearance this past season. His passion and dedication to the game of basketball, and more importantly kids, are what make him a good fit at NNHS. I look forward to watching the basketball program grow under his direction.”
At Mount Saint Mary’s, McCoy’s teams won district titles in each of his three seasons and also claimed a regional title in 2018. During his time with the Rockets, McCoy also worked as the program coordinator for Oklahoma Power, an AAU team. In that role he handled all aspects of managing 11 teams, with players ranging in age from 12 and under to 17 and under.
Prior to his stint at Mount Saint Mary’s, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Weber State University, primarily overseeing West Coast recruiting, guard development, scouting and game planning as well as travel and logistics. McCoy also spent a year with the Oklahoma men’s basketball program as a graduate assistant during the 2012-2013 season. He kicked off his coaching experience with a year as an assistant coach at Emporia State University in 2011-2012.
As a player, McCoy was a standout at Weber State University from 2007 to 2009. As a senior McCoy served as a team captain and was named the team’s most outstanding player while leading Weber State to a record of 15-1 and a conference title. He finished fourth in the Big Sky Conference by scoring 14.1 points per game and was named the league’s most valuable player. He was also named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press.
McCoy inherits a Norman North team that is among the very best in the state, with a record of 108-27 over the last five seasons. The Timberwolves went 20-4 in 2018 and finished as class 6A state semi-finalists. NNHS has developed a reputation for talent development recently, helping several players reach the NCAA Division I level, with alumnus Trae Young projected as a lottery pick in this year’s upcoming NBA Draft.
