Update from Norman Public Schools
Parents,
As you may know, there has been a lot of discussion and news coverage about the possibility of a statewide teacher walkout. These discussions among Oklahoma teachers are the result of continued inaction by state leaders to invest in educators and adequately fund public schools.
We understand parents have many questions about how this could impact our students and schools. Rest assured that we are working diligently to avoid a school closure, but also on contingency plans should a closure occur. We remain in close contact with the officials who are leading these statewide discussions and, if it becomes clear that a teacher walkout will impact our district, we will provide information to you as soon as possible.
In Norman, we are fortunate to live in a community that supports public education. We understand our success is due in large part to the Norman residents who are steadfast supporters of our students, teachers and staff. This has been made clear to us by the outpouring of support and offers to help that we have received in recent days. We are also fortunate to have local legislators who generally support our public education system. Together, we have built a premier public education experience for students in our community.
It is incredibly frustrating that we have reached a point at which teachers feel the need to consider such extraordinary measures. However, it is not surprising that what began as a grassroots movement has grown and intensified into a statewide, teacher-led initiative. While we do our very best to protect our classrooms from the impacts of ongoing budget cuts, we are not immune to statewide funding shortages. Perpetual cuts to our state funding threaten our ability to continue providing a world-class education for our students.
As a district, we are fiercely advocating for our students and teachers and hope to avoid a school closure. We are working closely with legislators to provide them with the information they need to make decisions at the State Capitol. If you have opinions on the topic, now is the time to share your thoughts with your state legislators. Click here to find the legislators who represent you.
We fully support our teachers and the important work they do every day to serve your children. It is our hope that state leaders will come together and invest in public education so our teachers and district can continue to deliver the educational excellence you expect and our students deserve.
We appreciate the parents, families, patrons and strategic partners who advocate for public schools and share our mission to prepare and inspire all students to achieve their full potential. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nick Migliorino
Superintendent
