Norman Public Schools Superintendent named to national board
Dr. Joseph Siano, superintendent of Norman Public Schools, this week was sworn in as a member of the Governing Board for AASA, The School Superintendents Association.
Founded in 1865 and headquartered in Alexandria, Va., AASA serves as the premier organization for the serving thousands of education leaders throughout the United States. The organization’s mission is to support and develop effective school system leaders who are dedicated to the highest quality public education for all children.
“Every student deserves access to the highest quality education available,” Siano said. “I’m honored to have been selected for this responsibility and look forward to working with the organization to continue advocating for all students and public education across the country.”
AASA members advance the goals of public education and champion children’s causes in their districts and nationwide. As school system leaders, AASA members set the pace for academic achievement. They help shape policy, oversee its implementation and represent school districts to the public at large.
Membership on the AASA Governing Board is based upon the number of eligible voting members in each state affiliate. Each state affiliate is guaranteed at least two representatives on the Board. The installation ceremony was held in conjunction with AASA’s Legislative Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.
Siano also was recognized at the conference as an “Outstanding Superintendent” for the district’s exceptional participation in the Speak Up Research Project for Digital Learning, which is facilitated by Project Tomorrow. He is one of only 20 school district superintendents in the nation - and the only superintendent in Oklahoma - to receive the honor.
“More than 2,600 districts participated in Speak Up 2015, but these 20 stood out to us for their commitment to raising the voices of their stakeholders, notably students, parents, community members and educators at all levels,” said Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow.
"It is an honor for our district to be recognized for our digital learning initiatives," Joseph Siano said. "We are fortunate to have a tremendous team of professional educators who work diligently to develop and implement solid instructional technology practices in our classrooms. The team’s innovative work is helping our district provide all of our students with access to technology and equal opportunities to succeed.”
