Norman Public School District hires two middle school principals

The Norman Board of Education tonight approved the district’s recommendation to hire two middle school principals for the upcoming school year.

Jonathan Atchley has been selected as the principal at Irving Middle School. Atchley previously was the assistant principal at Cimarron Middle School in Edmond. He also has taught in Mustang Public Schools and served as the district’s Language Arts coordinator. Atchley has been involved in a variety of EdCamp events and recently served as president of the Oklahoma Council of Teachers of English. He holds a master’s degree in educational administration and replaces Alice Graddy, who is relocating with her family to another state.

Carie Spannagel has been named as the principal at Longfellow Middle School. Previously, Spannagel served students as assistant director at New Tech High in Coppell, Texas. She also has served as the school’s development coach, facilitator, department chair and advocate. Prior to working in Texas she was a middle school teacher in Lawton Public Schools. Spannagel holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and replaces Shelly Ellis, who has accepted a position at the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

“We are excited for these individuals to join our district,” said Dr. Joe Siano, superintendent, Norman Public Schools. “We are confident in their ability to successfully lead these schools and know our students will benefit from the wealth of experience they bring to their roles.”
