Our Commitment to Sustainability

Norman Public Schools has a strong history of embracing energy conservation and protecting natural resources while exercising sound financial management. In 2024-2025, we are excited to share with the community the new programs that further strengthen our commitment to being an environmentally conscious school district. The links below will provide information about what we are doing to increase energy awareness within our school community, adopt renewable energy sources, and expand and promote environmental programs.

Earth Day April 22 Did you know? 79% of plastic ever made still sits in landfills or the natural environment. 4.5 pounds of trash is produced per day by the average American Do Your Part Be an Earth Day Hero by... Taking a walk or bike ride to have fun while reducing emissions. Beautifying your neighborhood by cleaning up discarded trash. Planting a seed or tree to appreciate Earth while adding to our vital ecosystem.

Environmental Impact Our energy savings amounts to decreased CO2 emissions by 1889 metric tons. This reduced use is equivalent to: CO2 (exhaust) generated by driving as average vehicle 4,688.025 miles. Eliminating greenhouse gasses emitted by 654 tons of waste recycled. Amount of greenhouse gasses emitted for an entire year by 238 average homes. Amount of carbon sequestered by 31,229 trees for 10 years.

Sarah Chan is the Energy Specialist for Norman Public Schools. She has 20 years of teaching experience, including at Irving Middle School and Washington Elementary. While at Irving, She served as co-sponsor of the Students for Solar Club and developed a passion for increasing energy efficiency and exploring ways to bring renewable energy projects to our school. Her vision is to expand sustainability opportunities across the district.
