Family Engagement

Norman Public Schools is dedicated to fostering strong connections and engagement among families, schools, the District, and the community. Our commitment lies in creating a secure and nurturing environment for all students, where academic achievement and social development thrive.

Schools aim to cultivate meaningful partnerships with families by focusing on three key pillars:

  1. Communication: Establishing effective two-way communication channels between families and educators is vital. This means providing various means for families and teachers to receive and discuss information about students' progress, both inside and outside the school environment.

  2. Community: Building strong relationships within the school community is essential. Every member should feel valued, knowing they contribute significantly to students' academic achievements and overall well-being.

  3. Connecting Learning at Home and School: Families are essential partners in understanding and addressing their child's needs. It's crucial for parents to be aware of their child's progress in school and understand how they can support their learning and development at home. This connection between home and school learning is key to student success.

Inviting School Climate

Every student deserves a school environment that ensures both physical safety and emotional support. This includes equitable and consistent rules, positive staff-student relationships that cultivate a sense of belonging, effective social-emotional learning initiatives, and meaningful family engagement tailored to meet students' needs. Our goal is to enable all students to excel by providing them with the right resources and support. Moreover, we strive to create a welcoming atmosphere where every family feels encouraged to actively participate in their child's educational experience at every school site.

YOUR GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent-Teacher Conferences are an excellent opportunity to partner with your child's teacher! Students are more likely to succeed in school when their families are involved and participate in their education.

Why Attend?

Conferences are a valuable time to:

  • Learn about progress: Find out how your student is doing academically, including their grades and overall progress.

  • Discuss behavior: Talk about how your child behaves at school and how they get along with others.

  • Share your insights: Share what you know about your child's interests, dislikes, and goals. Your information helps the teacher better understand and teach your child.

  • Ask questions: Address any questions or concerns you may have.

  • Get support tips: Receive tips and information from the teacher on how to best support your student at home.

How to Prepare

To make the most of your meeting, which usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes:

  • Attend the Conference: If you have a conflict, immediately contact your teacher to reschedule or ask for a video/call conference option.

  • Be on Time: Meetings are often scheduled one after another, so please plan to arrive on time. Elementary conferences are usually scheduled by appointment, while middle and high school conferences are typically come-and-go. Check with your child’s school or teacher for specific details.

  • Prepare Questions: Think ahead about what you want to ask the teacher.

  • Speak Up: Don't hesitate to voice your opinions and concerns with your teacher.

Helpful Questions to Ask

Asking thoughtful questions helps focus the conversation and makes the conference a springboard for ongoing partnership.
