Sex Education and HIV/AIDS Prevention
-
The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) requires school districts to teach HIV/AIDS prevention education (§70-11-103.3). This curriculum will be presented by science teachers in grades 6, 8, and high school Biology in April.
If you do not want your child to participate in the HIV/AIDS prevention education, you can choose to opt your child out by emailing the school principal or completing this form by March 28, 2024. You can also contact your child’s science teacher for questions.
This year, in our middle schools, we will continue teaching our Second Step curriculum for middle school students that addresses Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions (Unit 3) and Managing Relationships and Social Conflict (Unit 4) in the spring. These lessons focus on overall well-being and making healthy relational decisions.
In addition, Norman Public Schools will host a Parent Information and Sex Education Resource session, which will include an opportunity to review HIV/AIDS Prevention materials. This informational session will be on February 27, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., at the NPS Administrative Services Center (131 S. Flood Avenue). Beth Roberson, NPS Health Services, and Kitrena Hime, Director of Counseling & Student Advocacy, will be there to answer questions and provide resources regarding sex education and how parents can talk with their child about sex. If families are interested in sex education resources for home, educational materials can be accessed online at (https://www.normanpublicschools.org/Page/2493)
For further information on sex education or HIV/AIDS Prevention, please contact Jaime Bagg, NPS Science Coordinator at jbagg2@normanps.org.
