Advancement via Individual Determination

  • The mission of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:

    • Will succeed in rigorous curriculum
    • Will complete a rigorous college preparatory path
    • Will enter mainstream activities of the school
    • Will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges
    • Will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society

AVID is a program for “middle to upper middle” academic students.  These students have the potential for advanced courses and AP courses in high school, but need academic and emotional support paired with the rigor.  AVID combines rigor with support that includes the student’s own individual determination and the support of teachers, other AVID students, their families, the AVID teacher, and specially trained tutors.

Student participation is voluntary, and applications may be obtained from eighth-grade counselors, the high school AVID coordinator, AVID teachers, or the District Director.  AVID is an elective course that has curriculum that is designed to help students:

    • Improve study skills
    • Develop organizational habits
    • Improve speaking and writing
    • Identify problems and seek resources for solutions
    • Become a more successful student and achieve at a higher level

AVID I is for freshmen, AVID II is for sophomores, and AVID III is for juniors.  Students receive an elective credit for each semester.  Once students are enrolled in AVID and are successful, they are encouraged to participate for the remainder of their high school experience.
